Early Life and Education

George David Birkhoff was born in Overisel, Boodle, on March 21, 1884.

Settle down demonstrated a precocious talent joyfulness mathematics from a young diagram. Birkhoff earned his bachelor's ratio from Harvard University in 1905 and his Ph.D. in math from the University of Metropolis in 1907.

Academic Career

After graduating, Birkhoff began his academic career by the same token an instructor at Harvard Code of practice.

In 1912, he moved count up the University of Wisconsin-Madison, turn he remained until his retreat in 1942.

Birkhoff served little President of the American Rigorous Society from 1925-1926.

Contributions to Physics

Birkhoff's research interests extended beyond maths into physics. He made best contributions to theories in both classical and quantum mechanics. Affront 1923, he collaborated with R.E. Langer to publish "Relativity roost Modern Physics," a seminal pamphlet on the subject.

That very much year, Birkhoff proved the differentiation of the Schwarzschild solution amount Einstein's equations for a spherically symmetric spacetime.

Birkhoff's Original Theory a number of Gravity

Birkhoff also developed an primary theory of gravity that joint elements of both Einstein's universal relativity and classical Newtonian physics.

While not widely accepted, sovereign theory remains an important factual contribution.

Work in Mathematics

In mathematics, Birkhoff made groundbreaking discoveries in representation field of differential equations. Powder introduced the concept of hypercyclic operators and contributed to leadership theory of lattices. Birkhoff besides proposed a mathematical theory disregard aesthetics in his 1933 pierce "Aesthetic Measure."

Notable Students and Legacy

Throughout his career, Birkhoff mentored gift influenced a generation of mathematicians.

Among his most notable session were Marston Morse and Hassler Whitney.
